Terra Nova

We are officially at the continent, stationed at Lake Hoare. We'll be here for probably 10ish days, and then off to other lakes. It's colder here than it should be (-22F), but should be warming soon. The helo flight was quite a bit of fun. The views were great; many pictures taken. I'll be putting some up, probably similar to those you've been expecting.

In other news, Ann Curry from the Today Show is here. She's quite a bitch (forgive me, but it's true), and neither her nor her film crew care about the people or science that is happening here. They just want a story, and expect the station to stop and start on their whim. I spend about two hours with her today (her flight was just before mine, and there's quite a bit of prep, then she was at LH with Meda and I), and she never once asked what I (or Meda, for that matter) was there for. The entire crew was just trying to figure out how quickly they could finish. When the were interviewing someone, the sound and camera guys would turn away to catch a passing helo or plane. However, if you are interested in seeing the show (I can't imagine I'll be in it, despite running into her a few times over the past few days, and being in the Valleys with them today) the information is provided below.

Greetings from Antarctica.

Heh, I was wondering about that... They've been showing ads about the green world and where everyone was going to be worldwide. She even looks pissed off in the tv spot they've been running.

yeah, they suck. lots. if anyone is going to watch it, calculate from the mountain time, as the eastern got cut off funny.

It looks like the time is on there right, either way it looks like it'd start 4 am central time. Also, I was on the Today Show website (thinking they might show a general time the show was on, but I guess they're assuming everyone knows it or they're hiding it...) and they've got a phoned in conversation with Ann Curry. She said it was -60 there, bitched that the moment you stepped outside you couldn't move your fingers anymore and that "the scientists here should be commended" for working at the station--the guy she was talking to even noted how much she hated the area (she couldn't hide it in her tone of voice).

Damnit. What a useless reporter. Way to present an unbiased view of a situation, place, or topic. Christ.

I finally saw a TV spot for the show. Ann Curry really looked like she was only outside with a coat on to prove that she was there in Antarctica.

Don't sweat it. Reporters can't have personal interest or involvement in every story they run (though they don't have to take it out on you...). They may have not cared about why they were there, but at least it'll (hopefully) get the story out to those that actually do care, and that's what's important.

Yeah. That's a good point. But, I dunno... I'm not sure I can manage optimism. :P

What I don't understand about this whole "green" special is how it goes against the principles of green to ship these reporters all over the globe. Don't they realize the jets burning jet fuel that they're using to send these people all over are just adding to atmospheric pollution?

You have to wonder why a reporter would do a story, and a story of big interest to a lot of people, and cop an attitude while doing it. Just shows the lack of professionalism and reporting style. Dad wants to know how the boots are working out. We still may pick up a pair for each of us...watching for sales.
